This lovely medal features the profile of a praying young woman, probably the Virgin Mary or a Saint. The medal has beautiful scrollwork with flowery details. It is framed with blue enamel. The back was nicely engraved with the name Annie and a date 10/7/46, a birth date, a christening or 1st communion date. Religious medals are used to be gifted for a special occasion and it accompanies the person during their whole life. This one is in good condition.

This beautiful important brooch, convertible into pendant, features a shell cameo set on 18kt yellow gold. The cameo depicts Antinous as Dionysos. This young man was the favourite of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Dionysos is the Greek wine god, which is why Antinous is wearing a crown of vine leaves with grapes. The cameo is in very good antique condition, it is from the Victorian era since it marked with the French horse’s head (mark used in France between 1838 and 1911).

The back shows the perched eagle with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above, the American motto E PLURIBUS UNUM: Out of Many one, to the right, IN GOD WE TRUST in the field at the center right and the denomination expressed as FIVE DOLLARS below. This medal is from the Art Nouveau period in France circa 1900. It features Saint Georges slaying the Dragon. On the verso we can see the representation of a passage of the Bible: Mark 4, 35-41.
The scene takes place on a boat. The apostles are frightened by the storm and the Christ is asleep. The verse in Latin is written all around the sailboat: In Tempestate Securitas, which means: “security in the storm”. There is also the name of Louis and a date 3 mai 1923. The medal is adorned with a beautiful 18k openwork gold crown with flowers and leaves details. The pendant is marked with the French eagle’s head. The centrepiece is made in 18k yellow solid gold and the crown in 18k rose gold.
It is also signed Boivin on the left side and the maker’s mark on the hinge is the one of the jeweller Georges Mauboussin. It is controlled with the French eagle’s head for 18k gold.
